Christian Wohlwend is an ice hockey coach with passion, commitment and determination. He fights and tries everything to make his team succeed and does it in his own and authentic way. His emotional directness is his strength, he shares his opinion unfiltered. That doesn't always go down well. "He's the coach who always makes trouble and sometimes strains the players' nerves," writes the Tages-Anzeiger.
Career as a coach
The first coaching positions of Christian Wohlwend were at HC Thurgau, EHC Wallisellen and EHC Bülach. In 2013 he became youth coach at HC Lugano and assistant coach in the NLA. In 2015, after the dismissal of Patrick Fischer, Wohlwend took over the job as head coach at Ticino and became Fischer's assistant coach in the national team. In 2018, Switzerland won the World Cup silver medal with him and Wohlwend also celebrated successes as head coach of the U19 and U20 national teams, including a semi-final appearance at the World Cup in Vancouver. From 2019 to 2023, Wohlwend was head coach at HC Davos. On August 1, 2023, he will take over as head coach at HC Ajoie. Wohlwend has won multiple silver medals. In the 1st league with Bülach, with HC Lugano Elite A, with HC Davos at the Swiss Cup and with the national team at the World Cup.
Career as a player
Christian Wohlwend made a total of 47 appearances in the National League A (NLA) for SC Rapperswil-Jona and the Kloten Flyers in the 1996/97 and 1999/2000 seasons, respectively. He also played for HC Thurgau, Grasshopper Club Zürich and EHC Chur in National League B (NLB) during his career. For the Swiss junior national teams he played a U18 European Championship and U20 World Championships.
